Lobby group smell pork in marae funding

The Taxpayers’ Union says funding for marae upgrades is classic pork-barrel politics dressed up as a COVID-19 response.
Spokesperson Louis Houlbrooke says the Government should stop claiming that projects like the $9 million going to Invercargill’s Murihiku Marae is about creating jobs.
He says the money is borrowed to favour a particular voting block and future taxpayers from Kaitaia to the Bluff will pay for it plus interest.
Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene says the Murihiku project will create 33 jobs during construction and eight permanent jobs from the expanded services offered at the upgraded complex.
