Tai Tokerau Border Control dusts off checkpoints
Organisers of COVID checkpoints in Northland say they’re ready to start up again.
Tai Tokerau Border Control coordinator Rueben Taipari says they’ve been in touch with the police, iwi and health authorities since a community case of the more infectious South African strain of the coronavirus was detected.
He says the group is disappointed government has not already initiated plans to protect kaumātua and kuia in the north and Māori people in general, who comprise some of the most at-risk groups.
He also wants to know why New Zealand’s borders are still open, while Australia has cancelled free travel from here.
