Climate emergency call for action

Greens’ co-leader and Climate Change Minister James Shaw says today’s declaration of a climate emergency will be backed by action.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is set to make the declaration in parliament this afternoon.
Mr Shaw says unlike a short civil defence emergency, it will not give government any extra powers, but it will give the public service a message of what they need to prioritise.
"And so when we make that declaration today what you will hear the Prime Minister talk about is some of the stuff we are doing with the machinery of government and ministerial accountability to make sure we do do the things required in order for New Zealand to continue to play a leadership role in the fight against climate change," Mr Shaw says.
