New technologies could help iwi restore te mana o te wai
A University of Canterbury ecological engineer wants to work with iwi, council and industry to develop new water treatment options.
Dr Aisling O’Sullivan, an associate professor in the university’s civil and natural resources engineering department, has $3 million from the Science for Technological Innovation National Science Challenge to explore the use of treatment technologies such as 3D-printed water filters made from biomaterials.
She says it has the potential to disrupt the water treatment sector and return te mana o te wai to ecosystems and tangata whenua.
The project includes funding for six PhD scholarships and other researchers in what will be a cross-disciplinary, nationwide effort.
