A proposed change in the name of an Otago River will recognise rights of first discovery.
Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki and Te Rūnanga o Moeraki have asked the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa to rename Shag River (Waihemo) to Waihemo/ Shag River.
Board secretary Wendy Shaw says both parts of the name have been used together for more than 170 years meaning that the proposed dual name recognises both names are of equal significance.
Submissions on the change are open until December 16.
