Trump end good for Maori trade
The chair of Māori trade group Te Taumata says the departure of Donald Trump from the United States presidency will lift a cloud of uncertainly over world trade.
Even though he is unwilling to concede defeat, on January 20 President Trump must vacate the White House for President Joe Biden.
Chris Karamea Insley says over the past four years the United States has sought to undermine the World Trade Organisation, stalemating many initiatives.
He says Māori fishers, farmers and foresters have become increasingly concerned at the environment they are trying to trade in.
"Trade is so important for us. One in every four jobs created in New Zealand is directly derived from trade. So we should pay attention to what is going on in the US. It is encouraging but obviously it is going to take some time for the system to play out and Joe Biden to take the helm," Mr Karamea Insley says.
Māori can also now hope for action from new President Biden on the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.
