Watermark Tale of Takitimu inspires Atamira

Atamira Dance Company is getting back on the boards for its only public performance of 2020.

The Māori company will premiere a full length work at Auckland’s Q Theatre from November 26 to 28.

Creator Sean MacDonald of Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Raukawa says Ngā Wai was inspired by the sacred waters and whakapapa of Waimārama, his ancestral home in the Hawkes Bay.

It follows the journey of the Takitimu waka from Samoa to Waimarama, bringing in tales of seers, shapeshifters, warrior protectors, lovers and thwarted romance.
