Hoey praised for building Maori sector capacity
Screen producer Nicole Hoey has won this year’s Women in Film & Television Mana Wāhine Award.
The award will be presented at the Wairoa Māori Film Festival Gala Awards dinner next Sunday 25.
Ms Hoey, from Ngāti Kahu and Te Aupōuri, has been a leader in te reo Māori broadcasting for 30 years.
After starting in commercials, she switched the focus of her company Cinco Cine to normalising and revitalising te reo Māori via television, film and later digital media.
In 1997 she created the Koina Te Kōrero campaign around Māori placenames for TV3, putting Māori language into primetime for the first time on that network.
She has produced thousands of hours of television, film and more recently online content, providing opportunities for hundreds of Māori to develop production skills, alongside their te reo.
Programmes like the Pūkana, Kōrero Mai and Te Uru Whetu have also boosted the careers of a generation of Māori musicians, including Aria, Teeks, and Maimoa Music.
