Te Nikau brings city service to Greymouth

Health services on the West Coast have received a boost with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare today opening Te Nikau Hospital and Health Centre in Greymouth and turning the first sod at the Buller Health Centre site in Westport.
Mr Henare says Te Nikau has 56 inpatient beds, a 24/7 emergency department, critical care unit, acute and planned medical and surgical services, maternity care, radiology, lab services, paediatrics, outpatients and a pharmacy.
"So it’s absolutely fantastic that the people in Te Tai Poutini will have access to these services. Many of them talk to us about the challenges they have to get to Ōtautahi, to Christchurch just for some of the simple services we take for granted in places like Tāmaki or the urban centres," he says.
Peeni Henare says travelling to Te Tai Poutini he got a briefing from Te Tai Tonga on the large number of whānau Māori who live on the coast, including many with connections to the north.
