Law gap slows rapid response
Waikato regional councillors have been told a law change is needed to stop people swimming in the Aratiatia rapids.
The council is considering changes to its Navigation Safety Bylaw.
On Waitangi Day 2017 swimmer Rachael de Jong died after the floodgates of the Aratiatia Dam were opened.
Hearings committee chair Stu Kneebone says while there are no fences and signs warning people against swimming in the pool, an outright ban is not enforceable.
Swimming can be banned where it impedes the safe navigation of vessels, but because boats can’t enter the rapids the bylaw can’t be used.
