Wairarapa Moana gains Ramsar status
Wairarapa Moana, the North Island’s third largest wetland ecosystem, has been approved as a Wetland of International Importance.
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says Wairarapa iwi and community groups have pushed for the 10,000 hectares of wetland and open water to be granted status under the Ramsar Wetland Convention.
It means New Zealand must file regular reports to the convention that it is managing the wetland to protect the values that it currently has.
Wairarapa Moana wetland is home to 96 bird species, 25 native fish species, and countless plant species.
