Te Kahu o Taonui, which includes the chairs of all northern iwi, are warning people should not leave Tāmaki Makaurau to attend tangihanga during Alert Level 3 conditions.

Ngāti Whātua chair Dame Naida Glavish says they do not want mate urutā in Te Taitokerau, and iwi are working together to protect their communities.

Funerals, tangihanga and burials under Alert Level 3 are limited to 10 people with the tūpāpaku at any one time.

People can travel within their region to attend but not out of it.

Tūpāpaku can be moved out of the region only with the proper exemption documents.
