The New Zealand Maori Council’s executive chair is urging Maori to register to vote – but he’s drawing the line at the country’s newest political phenomenon.

Matthew Tukaki says Facebook "likes" don’t change the world, but voting does.

As for the New Zealand Public Party, which was born out of musician Billy Te Kahika’s Facebook chats about the COVID-19 conspiracy – he’s not so keen, and he’s even less keen about its marriage of convenience with former National MP Jami-Lee Ross’s Advance New Zealand Party.

“This nonsense coming from that party. I mean number one you’re dealing with a bloke who’s currently before the courts on some pretty significant changes from when he was a National MP, and on the other hand you’ve got this other bloke, fantastic guitar player, who’s starting to say things like ‘the SAS and the CIA and the FBI have been deployed to assassinate me.’ You can’t do business with coneheads I’m afraid,” Mr Tukaki says.
