Karanga affirms pride in moko kauae
Green Party MP Marama Davidson says it was an honour to be able to contribute her karanga to yesterday’s ceremony at Ōwairaka Mount Albert.
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei invited wahine to bring their karanga to support artist Ngahina Hohaia of Parihaka, who was racially abused and attacked on the maunga two weeks ago for her moko kauae.
A large circle was formed at the upper field, with Precious Clark from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei leading the call.
"People wanted to take their shoes off and feel it coming through Papatūānuku because it just overtook us, it was incredibly emotional and healing and it was a real signal and a real statement to say 'I'm sorry but we will wear our moko kauae with pride wherever the heck we want,' so I was deeply honoured to stand in support and to be able to add my karanga to the rolling karanga that went around that really large circle yesterday afternoon," Ms Davidson says.
