The Ahuwhenua Trust which owns Rotorua tourist attraction Tamaki Māori Village has signed an agreement with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Toi Ohomai to retrain staff.
Tauhara North No.2 Trust chair Ngahihi Bidois says the trust used government wage subsidies to retain all 110 employees during the COVID-19 Level 4 lockdown, but realistically it won’t be able to keep everyone on until the tourism industry recovers.
The MOU means intensive training courses will be delivered in primary industries in readiness for government projects, local infrastructure projects and DOC projects.
He says many of the whānau have only ever worked in tourism, and they can now get the chance to become builders, carpenters, agriculturalist and farmers post COVID-19.
The business also intends to relaunch its evening program next month.
A pōhiri is being held today at Tamaki Māori Village to launch the MOU.
Tauhara North No.2, which manages land within the rohe of Ngāti Tahu/Ngāti Whaoa, also has energy, farming, health and property assets.
