Smaller events for Auckland Matariki festival

Auckland Council has scaled down its Matariki Festival in response to Tāmaki Makaurau’s new normal.
The mid-winter festival starts on 20 June with the winter solstice and ends on 15 July as the Matariki star cluster rises above the horizon in the pre-dawn sky, ushering in the Māori New Year.
Waikato-Tainui will again be the iwi host.
Festival director Ataahua Papa says the festival will focus on smaller community events and online activities that highlight the sights, lights, sounds and learnings of te ao Māori.
It will also encourage people to celebrate with friends and whānau at home, in parks, at vantage points around the city and in their local communities.
