Whanganui rangatira remembered in gallery revamp

Whanganui’s Sarjeant Gallery will receive up to another $12 million from the Provincial Growth Fund to support a new extension dedicated to the late Sir Archie Taiaroa.
The PGF has already put $12 million into the gallery redevelopment, and the new money will cover cost increases to restore and earthquake-strengthen the nationally significant building.
The project is included in a $3 billion infrastructure pipeline announced by Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones Shane Jones this week.
Mr Jones says the gallery and its collection are nationally significant.
He says the funding will enable the gallery to preserve taonga on behalf of iwi and for future generations to come, and it has also developed partnerships with iwi to assist or train them in the preservation of heritage art.
