Hapū angry at hour of season digging

A Gisborne district councillor says hapū may have to take direct action to deal with law-breaking companies.
Ahi kā have posted a video online showing diggers from civil engineering company Fulton Hogan removing gravel from the Karakatuwhero River near Te Araroa, in breach of a consent condition it not operate between March to July when many native fish species are migrating.
Meredith Akuhata-Brown says she tried to contact key officials but was met with silence.
She says that sort of inertia on the part of officials could have consequences.
"We've seen Māori take action, blockade land, all that stuff, and that may be the only way we can challenge when something is absolutely breaking the law," she says.
