EPA light touch on OMV permit

Climate Justice Taranaki is slating the Environmental Protection Authority for giving OMV Taranaki Limited the green light to drill another ten exploratory wells in the Maui field offshore from Taranaki without requiring a bond.
Spokesperson Catherine Cheung says the recent Court of Appeal judgement on the Trans-Tasman Resources Limited seabed mining application discussed the need for bonds the cover any harms not covered by insurance.
It’s happening while floating production storage and offloading facility, Umuroa, has been effectively abandoned in the field with an estimated 40,000 barrels of oil on board because of the liquidation of Tamarind Taranaki.
She says the EPA needs to make it clear who it thinks will pay for any oil spill and the damage on fisheries and customary rights, marine ecosystem health and amenity.
