The principal of a Northland school is encouraging parents to let their inner teacher come out during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Pat Newman from Horahora Primary says that doesn’t necessarily mean reading, writing or maths, but could be something as simple as showing tamariki how to cook something or helping out in the garden.
He says time spent together as a whānau should be fun.
"That’s what the kids will remember. They're not going to remember whether they had a reading lesson during lockdown or whether they had a writing lesson but they are certainly going to remember if mum spent time or dad spent time with them. Some of my kids live out in the country on their block of land. They've been out eeling and learning how to eel with their dad. Well, that's a hell of a lot better than sitting down doing a reading lesson at the moment," he says.
