Labour’s Northcote candidate says it’s important not only business owners but workers know what support is available through the Government’s $12 billion Covid-19 economic relief package.
Shanan Halbert has visited more than 100 businesses in the electorate in the past couple of days to give them fact sheets and make them aware they can apply for wage subsidies of up to $585 a week for each full-time employee.
He’s also talking to the workers.
"And what I’m finding in our local restaurants is that they are absolutely empty, people are turning up to work and what we will see over the coming weeks is a reduction in hours for staff and we know that is where it hits our Māori people, so it's important they are asking the right questions and are aware of the support that is available to them," Mr Halbert says.
Responses from businesses range from tears whose business has come to a shuddering halt to sceptics who think they don’t need to do anything.
