A plague upon the country is how Kelvin Davis is describing the latest report on the incidence of sexual violence and violence against women.
The data report by the Family Violence Death Review Committee showed Māori women were three times more likely to be killed by a partner than non-Māori, and half of the women killed by their partner were killed after they left them.
Mr Davis, who in Opposition walked the length of his Te Tai Tokerau electorate to highlight the need to speak out on family and sexual violence, says while the figures for Māori are alarming, it's a problem that affects all ethnicities and social sectors.
"The best thing you can do is talk to our sons and our nephews and our cousins and our mates about respecting women, about just behaving in a respectful way towards women," he says.
