Social investment approach retired

National’s social investment approach to welfare has been formally retired.
Bill English’s idea that data already collected by various government agencies could be used to identify at-risk families and children and target help for them never found favour with Labour.
Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni says rather than a narrow, investment approach, the Government intends to combine science, data and lived experience to promote social wellbeing.
The Social Investment Agency will be renamed the Social Wellbeing Agency.
She says the new approach is already being used in policy research, such as a collaborative project with the South Initiative that looked at the how people responded to the stress of having a baby in South Auckland.
