Ngati Paoa involvement in waiheke stoat eradication
Te Korowai o Waiheke will layout 1500 stoat traps across the island this weekend in an effort to make the island predator-free.
Project coordinator Mary Frankham says it's working with local iwi Ngāti Paoa, which gave the project its name to reflect both the protective aspect and the weaving together of people that such a large project demands.
"Ngāti Paoa are involved at a number of levels, sitting on the board as trustees, as significant landholders – they have a large farm on Waiheke – and also the delivery programme. We have a Ngāti Paoa trapper on the team," she says.
Mary Frankham says the trust is also preparing a rat eradication programme.
