Marlborough puts land, sea and air in single plan

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says a proposed Marlborough Environment Plan is a first for New Zealand.
The document released this week at Omaka Marae near Blenheim defines in a single plan how natural and physical resources – "including air, freshwater and coastal waters, the productive land and the natural ecosystems – will be sustainably managed by the council in partnership with iwi, the community and central government.
The plan drew 1300 submissions which were covered over 54 days of hearing by an independent panel chaired by Marlborough Sounds resort owner Trevor Hook and including former Environment Court judge Shonagh Kenderdine and Waitangi Tribunal member Ron Crosby and helped by kaumatua Rawiri Faulkner .
Appeals against the plan can be lodged with the Environment Court until April 3.
