An Auckland councillor says she’s keen to see how the council is involved in a settlement to the Ihumātao dispute.
While the parties have indicated a resolution is close, the council side of the negotiations has been tightly held by Mayor Phil Goff and officials.
A suggestion floated last year was the Government could fund the council to buy the land now occupied by SOUL protesters from Fletcher Building and add it to existing reserves.
Angela Dalton says Mr Goff’s insistence the full council needs to vote on the proposal makes her think ownership is in the picture.
"My immediate thoughts go to have we brought mana whenua along on this journey? We could perhaps settle things among central government, local government and Kiingitanga but there is still some work to do and what is the outcome of our decision for the local iwi and how involved have the been in the discussions. Those will be my questions," she says.
