The new chair of Northland District Health Board says the health sector needs to think differently if it wants to address poor Māori health.
Harry Burkhardt from Ngāti Kuri is one of a large group of Māori who Health Minister David Clark has appointed to DHBs around the country to make them more responsive to Māori needs.
He says the review of the DHB system headed by Heather Simpson identified the sector as short-sighted and bureaucratic.
"The health sector operates myopically- it look inwards. It has high compliance, and if that becomes the primary reason you are running an organisation at the expense of meeting your whānau's needs then my sense is the system is not fit for purpose," Mr Burkhardt says.
