Maori role in universities probed
A Māori researcher says the way universities are treating Māori academics isn’t matching the leadership Māori are showing in research.
Dr Tyron Love, a senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury’s College of Business and Law, has a Marsden Fund grant to look at the future of Māori academics in New Zealand universities.
He says preliminary findings indicate not much has changed for Māori academics in universities over the past few decades.
Māori academics often feel exploited for their perceived cultural knowledge in the university system, such as being asked to do karakia or bless food.
He also wants to understand the exclusion of cultural knowledge in a university setting.
