Pou links Awa FM to iwi legacy

Whanganui iwi radio station Awa FM is on the move.
This Saturday the station, which is celebrating both its 28th birthday and the opening its new studio on Victoria Avenue.
Station manager Whetu Fala says she's pleased it's now in a building owned by all the river iwi, which also houses the Whanganui offices of Te Puni Kōkiri.
A highlight is the installation of a storey-high pou originally carved by George Waretini for the Whanganui exhibition at Te Papa in 2007, which was gifted to the station by the carver on his deathbed.
"It was taken from Whanganui Regional Museum upon his wishes, he was in hospital. The moment the pou went up our master carver passed so this pou is coming with us and is part of the celebration of our new building which is now all owned by the iwi of Whanganui," Ms Fala says.
