Passion for animation gives global view
The founder of an organisation set up to teach young people the basics of animation has been named one of this year’s Asia Society Asia 21 Young Leaders.
Nikora Ngaropo says he was drawn to animation while attending design school when he saw the work being done by studios such as Toy Story creator Pixar.
He founded Young Animators in 2016 as a way to show Kura Kaupapa tamariki it could be a career option, and it has since been picked up by many schools and kura around the country.
He says rangatahi now are digitally fluent and can quickly pick up the basics of animation.
"We’re currently trying to condense the whole animation pipeline into two days. Those rangatahi are working on purakau and pakiwaitara from their different areas plus they're also going to push those resources once they're finished into early learning centres and kohanga right across the country," Mr Ngaropo says.
He heads off next week to San Francisco and Silicon Valley for the annual Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit on the theme Technology & Humanity: Roadmaps for the Future.
