Ngāti Hine looks to past and future at festival
Northland iwi Ngāti Hine gets together at Ōtīria Marae in Moerewa over this weekend to listen to kapa haka, music and kōrero, wānanga about the past, present and future, eat kai, and generally celebrate being Ngāti Hine.
Te Ahuareka o Ngāti Hine organising committee chair Tapeka Henare says the biennial festival is getting bigger every time it’s run.
This year’s theme is Kōrerotia te reo o Ngāti Hine, Let's speak the language of Ngāti Hine, and debates led by speakers like Waihoroi Shortland, Moe Milne and Pierre Lyndon will show how it’s done.
She says there’s also discussion of the tribe’s treaty claims and its efforts to seek a settlement independently of Ngāpuhi.
Te Ahuareka o Ngāti Hine kicks off with a pōwhiri at 8.30 this morning for a day of cultural performances from kōhanga reo to secondary schools, with the main day tomorrow and Sunday given over to a rā maumahara including a wānanga on the life of Ngāti Hine leader Sir James Henare.
