Tana claims exoneration but petrol leak damage done

Outgoing Porirua Mayor Mike Tana wants an investigation into the leaking of an email which he believes cost him the election.
Council chief executive Wendy Walker emailed councillors informing them she was querying Mr Tana’s use of his council fuel card.
The leak meant the investigation, which Mr Tana says could have been done after the election, became an issue as people were voting and could have influenced the election.
He says he was exonerated by an auditor's report released this week which found about 64 per cent of travel on the days in question was for personal use, driving to Palmerston North to pick up one of his children, and driving another to his Wellington school.
Mr Tana says he paid a salary reduction to use the mayoral car for full private use, so the travel was appropriate.
Ms Walker said she would put the report on Mr Tana's petrol card usage in front of the new council's Audit and Risk Committee for its consideration.
