Social procurement on Goff agenda
Auckland mayor Phil Goff is keen to see the council's procurement process used to benefit Māori firms and workers.
Lobby group Taxpayers Union is raising the alarm about the Government considering support for policies that seek to actively increase government contracting to indigenous firms.
Mr Goff has something similar on his agenda for his second term.
"It's about social procurement so when we undertake some of those big jobs like the Easter Busway we say to the company that wins the contract, part of the deal is not to import the skills you need but to take local people and particularly Māori and Pasifika who are over-represented in the unemployment statistics and give them the chance that they need to make a decent life for themselves."
