Rangatahi link arms over climate change

Rangatahi around the country are taking time off school today to protest climate change – and OraTaiao: NZ Climate and Health Council is joining them.

Co-convenor Rhys Jones says the inaction of governments and politicians around the world is being shown up by the younger generation.

He says climate chance is a consequence of economic systems that put profit over the environment and people.

"Western colonial capitalist systems have damaged the earth and natural resource and these things will have really serious impacts on whānau in terms of climate change but also a lot of the other environmental impacts likely to hit Māori and Pacific whānau hardest here in Aotearoa," Dr Jones says.

Today's Climate Strike activities include a rally in Aotea Square at midday which will hear from speakers including Save Our Unique Landscape leader Pania Newton, and then a march down Queen Street to Quay Street where protesters will form a human chain, linking arms or holding hands.
