Greens keen on Māori option anytime
Green Party electoral reform spokesperson Golriz Ghahraman has asked the justice select committee to add a provision to the Electoral Amendment Bill allowing Māori to change rolls between elections.
Currently Māori voters only switch between the Māori and general rolls during the electoral option process run after every five-year census.
She says that restriction is unnecessary and removing it will help Māori participation in democracy.
Ms Ghahraman is also calling for more transparency on political donations to protect Aotearoa against political interference, and for an end to the prisoner voting ban introduced by National in 2010.
