National Māori Authority says kōrero for suicide prevention
The National Māori Authority wants to talk about suicide.
Or rather, it wants to help Māori talk when they need help.
Chair Matthew Tukaki, who is a former chair of Suicide Prevention Australia, says the Government is failing to act, and its business model of mental health service provision was not addressing the challenge of the daily struggle of life many New Zealanders face.
The authority is launching three initiatives:
– a new online national resource called 'how to have a kōrero';
– health promotion campaigns targeting men where they meet, work and play;
and a new national network of community led kōrero circles.
The website will go live on September 25 with resources to help people understand the signs a loved one or friend might be in trouble, how have to have a conversation and what to do next.
