Māori Anthems start of reo Māori journey

With the Rugby World Cup looming, Hinewehi Mohi wanted to get beyond the 20th anniversary of her singing the New Zealand anthem in Māori before the 1990 contest – so she has produced an album of other artists singing their hits in te reo.
Māori Anthems is being launched today.
The lyrics were translated by Sir Timoti Karetu, and Mohi supported the artists through the recording process, as many had never sung in Māori before.
She says it has been her most satisfying musical project.
"It's been so wonderful to see the music come to fruition in a beautiful different, authentic reo Māori form but also to see the artists and how they have really embraced it and it has been the kickstart for many of them for their own reo Māori journey," she says.
Hinewehi Mohi says being sung in Māori has given songs like Six60s's Don't Forget Your Roots a whole new momentum.
