Plantings to spruce up Ruapekapeka for anniversary
Pupils from Whangarei Intermediate along with people under the control of community corrections, Department of Conservation staff and volunteers and the Ruapekapeka Trust planted trees on Ruapekapeka pa today.
Pauline Hopa, the director for the Te Kupenga project at the Northland Regional Corrections Facility says it's part of the restoration of the site to prepare it for the 175th anniversary of the battle in January 2021.
She says it's a site more people should visit.
"If you're wanting to do something that is extra special it's not too far off State Highway 1 as you go through Towai and you'll see it signposted. It's worth a stop and it's free. You'll get to see the place, feel the battle ground. It's just awesome," Ms Hopa says.
