Rate freeze means rent relief in Tamihere calculation

Auckland mayoralty candidate John Tamihere believes the city's residents need relief from rents.
He's promising not to raise rates for three years, and he wants landlords to pass on some of the benefit to their tenants.
He says it's something tenants could raise in negotiations with their landlords.
"Sixty percent of all Pacific Islanders and 58 percent of all Maori are in tenancies in this city and they deserved a bit of a break from the petrol tax as well as from relentless rental increases," Mr Tamihere says.
He says while he's putting fresh ideas like rates freezes and new harbour crossings on the table, incumbent Phil Goff is spending his time attacking those ideas rather than putting up ideas of his own.
