Manurewa sports bar gets thumbs down

In a rare win for communities fighting a proliferation of liquor outlets, a district licencing committee has denied an on-licence for a proposed sports bar in the former Manurewa Returned Services Association premises.
Manurewa Local Board chair Angela Dalton says the committee was swayed by the wide community opposition, and especially by the submission of Dave Ratu from the Ōtara Māori Wardens Manurewa who is a consistent opponent of waipiro in south Auckland.
The committee could see no benefit in yet another outlet in an area of high deprivation.
"It was going to be pitched as an upmarket bar and it was really hard to see where those people would come from and the DLC said in the judgment the people who would frequent it would be our people who really can't afford and don't need another place to go. We've got more than our share of on and off licences within the town centre," Ms Dalton says.
It's likely the decision will be appealed, but for now it sets an important precedent.
