Greens co-leader James Shaw is backing Kelvin Davis's reform of the prison system.
The Corrections Minister has launched a new strategy, Hōkai Rangi, to address Māori reoffending and imprisonment.
Mr Shaw says the emphasis on Māori-led solutions is transformation and long overdue.
"For decades now we've had a real 'lock them up and throw away the key' approach to the justice system and that has led to one of the highest imprisonment rates in the western world. That massively affects Māori and as (Minister Davis) has said, there is huge institutional racism that needs to be overcome," he says.
