Pūtea to get visitors to Ruapekapeka


A scheme to draw visitors to Northland's Ruapekapeka Pā is one of the first 10 projects to get funding from the new International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy.
Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis says the $1.2 million scheme a will also make the hilltop battle site just south of the Bay of Islands a hub connecting other Land Wars sites in the region.
The biggest investment of $5.2 million will go to promote tourism careers and train the workforce.
There is $3 million to develop options for the management of Milford Sound-Piopiotahi, and $3.2 million to plan to destination management in Westland.
On the conservation side there's money to establish new kakapō recovery sites, eradicate pests from Auckland Island, enhance visitor safety in Tongariro National Park and reduce the risk of wildlife smuggling.
