Faafoi keen to clean up spectrum disturbance

Communications Minister Kris Faafoi has told Parliament's economic development, science and innovation select committee he wants to establish a proper framework for iwi radio spectrum allocations.
The government wants to hold the first auction of 3.5 gigahertz band spectrum next year so companies can deploy 5G technology by the end of 2022 if not earlier.
Faafoi said he's had the first meeting with iwi stakeholders, and is working through what both sides might see as not just reasonable, but beneficial.
Broadcasting claimants have told him previous engagement with other spectrum allocations have been sub-optimal, including the 4G auction in 2013 when National refused to reserve any spectrum for Māori.
