Mātauranga Māori needed for justice reform
The Greens' Treaty of Waitangi spokesperson says government must listen to the voices of Māori as it responds to He Waka Roimata, the first report from the Safe and Effective Justice Advisory Group.
Jan Logie, who is also the Parliamentary Undersecretary for Sexual and Domestic Violence Issues, says the report aligns with the work her team is doing, including its Māori advisory panel Te Rōpu.
"I've seen just again and again in my time working in the community and in Opposition where really well-meaning Pākehā hear from Māori about what they need and then take it as one perspective they put into the Pākehā policy mix and our pops something that looks entirely different from what Māori have said that they need," she says.
Jan Logie says government has got to start respecting mātauranga Māori if it wants different results for Māori.
