Budget shows people matter
The chair of North Island whānau ora commissioning agency Te Pou Matakana says yesterday’s budget sent the message that people matter.
The so called Wellbeing Budget included an extra $80 million over four years for whānau ora in the wake of a review that found it was an effective way of helping whānau determine their needs, aspirations and desired outcomes.
Some of the money will go to train up more whānau ora navigators.
Merepeka Raukawa-Tait says there is a real focus not just on GDP growth but on people growth and on lifting Māori.
"Rohe are starting to run symposiums which are kind of rohe-driven to bring people together to share the kids of things that are happening in the rohe. We’re kind of looking at whether every two or three years it ought to be time to pull the motu together so that we see what’s happening all around," Mrs Raukawa Tait says.
