Logie listening for kaupapa change

Parliamentary under-secretary Jan Logie says the Wellbeing Budget package to address domestic and sexual violence is a chance for government to reset the way government works with Māori.
The $320 million package includes an allocation for kaupapa Māori services.
Ms Logies says that’s not a phrase that has a clear meaning within government, and there needs to be more discussion with Māoridom about how it can work,
That’s why the process of developing the package included appointing a Māori advisory panel, Te Rōpu, which is working on a model to make sure Māori have oversight of the work and can say if it is effective for Māori.
"We have seen, and I have seen it really clearly in some of the discussions in parliament, whereMāori are telling us what they need, then it goes through the government sausage maker and comes out as something entirely different. What we have been doing hasn’t been working and if we want to have a change of turning this around, we’ve got to change what we’re doing," Ms Logie says.
