Māori Media Shift review finds sector underfunded

Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says some Māori media struggle to find the resources to tell the stories Māori audiences want to see – but there will be no relief in this year's Budget.
The Minister released an overview of findings from the Māori Media Sector Shift review.
She says Māori media are significant players in the revitalisation of te reo Māori and for providing Māori content in both English and te reo Māori for all New Zealanders.
They face a challenge from new technologies that have changed the way audiences consume content.
She says the overview highlights the challenges Māori media organisations face in delivering public service roles within a highly deregulated and commercial market, with significantly lower budgets for producing each hour of content than in the wider public media sector.
Her ministry will work on high level options for Cabinet to consider before any decisions are made at the end of the year.
