Ngāti Kahungunu chair Ngahiwi Tomoana has been re-elected for an eighth three year term, which he promises will be his last.
Mr Tomoana saw off challenges from Shane Walker and Johnny Nepe Apatu.
He says the people think he has a job to finish, after pulling together what had been a fragmented iwi.
"Since the musket wars we've been scattered and pillaged and plundered. Over 25 years we have put it all back together and now we have a semblance of unity with diversity, so kotahitanga with mana motuhaketanga of each hapū. The iwi is strong, hapu are now strong with all their land claims, and now we've got to make whānau be the champions that they are," Mr Tomoana says.
He’s tried to ensure the iwi isn’t just focused on social and cultural issues, but also promotes economic activity for its people.
