Jobs of future in modular homes
Young people on benefits will be given training and work experience in the building trades.
The Kiwi Can Do programme was launched by Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni at the Wesley Rata Village site in Lower Hutt this morning, alongside Building and Construction Minister Jenny Salesa and Employment Minister Willie Jackson.
She says the initiative will upskill and train young beneficiaries for industries like construction that have a severe shortage of skilled workers as well as increase the supply of community housing to low and middle income New Zealanders.
The programme is a joint venture between MSD employment provider Kiwi Can Do, ministry, Wesley Community Action and modular construction company EasyBuild, which is building 25 houses at Wesley Rata.
Ms Sepuloni says Kiwi Can Do can train up to 1200 people a year nationwide.
She says the construction industry is moving towards prefabricated construction, so opportunities for people on benefits to get hands on experience of what will be the jobs of the future is invaluable.
