Collective effort wins classic prize for Moana

Moana Moaniapoto says getting a tohu for the 1993 Moana and the Moahunters’ album Tahi was a chance to walk down memory lane.
The Independent Music New Zealand Classic Record Award was presented at last night’s Taite Music Awards in Auckland.
She says a highlight of the night was watching the documentary video, including footage shot around Ngā Whare Waatea and Manukau Urban Māori Authority.
"There were a lot of faces there – in Black Girl there was Wena Harawira and there was Joe Paku, Nanny Mack, Martin Cooper, Annie Thorpe, it was awesome, and it reminded me of the cast of thousands that put a lot of love into that album, that contributed to it," she says.
The Taite Prize for an outstanding New Zealand album released in the past calendar year went to Tom Scott of Avondale Bowling Club, while debut album prize went to Waipū metal trio Alien Weaponry, which has delivered te reo Māori to metal fans worldwide.
